Position Summary:

  • Manage a team of assembly millwrights for outfitting and assembly of new project builds.

  • Responsible for the effective and successful management of labor, budgets, productivity, quality control and safety measures established.

  • Responsibilities may include interviewing, selection and hiring; training new and existing employees; planning, assigning and directing work; authoring and discussing with employee’s performance appraisals; addressing employee performance and corrective action plans.

 

Essential Functions and Major Responsibilities: 

  • Lead a team to disassemble, diagnose, repair or replace, reassemble and test small to large assemblies for new builds and the ship repair industry.

  • Fit bearings, shafts, attach motors, and connect and align couplings and belts to precise tolerances.

  • Assemble and test mechanical components

  • Will read blueprints, diagrams, bill of materials, schematics and other technical documents to dismantle and assemble equipment.  

  • Develop plans and sequencing for assemblies.

  • Has a solid, working knowledge of rigging and overhead crane operation, lifting device use and inspection and load calculations.

  • Use a variety of hand tools and measuring tools. You will lift heavy objects, physically manipulate objects with tools as needed utilizing cranes and other equipment to complete large-scale projects in your daily job duties.

  • Provides constructive, prompt and productive feedback to employees on skills and work performance.

  • Arrives at the shipyard with adequate time to dress, receives verbal and written turnovers, confers with Manager/Project Team, checks and assigns staffing and plans the work flow.

  • Assigns work, maintaining staffing plan, budget and schedule as a guide.

  • Sets daily production goals, measures performance and provides feedback to employees.

  • Provides training and mentorship or assists to assign/resource training as needed on safety, use of equipment and work procedures.

  • Evaluates employees on skills and work performance and reports progress to craft management.

  • Plans labor, material and equipment per project plans and safety requirements

  • Estimates and orders staffing as needed per work scope.

  • Manages and coordinates shop related items required for the project.

  • Orders materials and equipment per specifications.

  • Assists project team with production schedules and maintains schedule to meet project goals.

  • Assists project team with change orders, estimating and progress tracking.

  • Ensures that work meets or exceeds quality standards.

  • Completes or confirms that all quality assurance documentation is complete and work is satisfactory prior to final inspection.

  • Accesses referenced technical requirements from specification.

  • In conjunction with QA department, evaluates discrepancies to determine root cause and gives proper instruction to preclude reoccurrence.

  • Ensures test equipment for required test and trials are in good working order and calibrated.

  • Ensures that all spills of oil, hazardous materials, new or spent blast media, paints, etc. are cleaned up immediately.

  • Reads the entire specification for the project and determines expectations for scope of work.

  • Writes or edits JHA, CFR and other forms to company standards.

  • Spends most of their time on the job site, providing clear and precise direction to others.

  • Assures work force complies with company policy and has direction and tooling to be productive.

  • Completes assigned work on a project (all items and support of others).

  • Communicates daily progress to Project Team and Craft Management

  • Receives broad scope of work and direction from project team.

  • Regularly works with tools while supervising small crew.

 

Additional Skills / Qualifications

  • Practice and emphasize values and a culture that places the highest standard on workplace safety, housekeeping and quality of workmanship.

  • This person needs to be driven towards continual improvement. Can also mentor lower level peers as needed.

  • Understand machined fits and be able to use measuring equipment to verify sizes of parts prior to assembly.

  • Understanding bearings installation and adjustment along with some hydraulic and electrical experience is a plus

  • Ability to run manual machine tools is a plus.

 

Education and/or Experience: 

Requires a bachelor's degree in area of specialty or 5 years of experience in the field or in a related area.
